Under the theme “Arch Bridges – Natural beauty for all time“, the 9th International Conference on Arch Bridges (ARCH 2019), will be held in Porto, Portugal, on October 2 to 4, 2019. The conference will be organized by the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.
Since the first ARCH Conference (UK 1995), seven subsequent editions took place (Italy 1998, France 2001, Spain 2004, Portugal 2007, China 2010, Croatia 2013 and Wroclaw 2016), all high quality and successful events. Stemming from such heritage, it is our pleasure to invite you to the next 2019 ARCH conference edition.
Following previous editions, ARCH 2019 will be an international forum addressed to all those who deal with arch bridge structures, namely scientists, designers, technicians, stakeholders and contractors, seeking for related knowledge, experience and specialized information exchange and diffusion. Topics cover arch structures’ related issues, namely technical, scientific, historical, social and cultural, addressing heritage and contemporary arch bridges as well as future perspectives and challenges.
The city of Porto, famous for the Port Wine, is the largest of Northern Portugal and presently one of the most attractive touristic places of Portugal with four beautiful and impressive examples of arch bridges, one of which is considered National Monument crossing the Douro River in a World Heritage Site Zone.
Porto is therefore definitely influenced by the Douro River, which springs in Spain and runs to the Atlantic Ocean at Porto, crossing east to west in Portugal, throughout the gorgeous views of highlands’ Douro vineyards classified as World Heritage Cultural Landscapes. Douro River is crossed by several dams and bridges, but the largest density of its arch bridges is located in Porto where XIXth century to the 3rd millennium masterpieces shape the landscape. There we have a major reason to host ARCH 2019 at Porto (former Portus Cale), the place from which Portugal got its name.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee we hope you consider accepting this invitation, as we are committing ourselves to provide the best possible for your overall satisfaction during and after the conference.
Sincerely yours
